Backup - Old Sustainability Page

Verlein is committed to an ethical operating approach and understanding and improving its environmental and social impact.  This commitment is reflected in our choices of materials, suppliers, and partners throughout our supply chain.

Verlein has made the commitment not to use any plastic in our packaging.  Our product and shipping boxes are made of 100% recyclable paper products.  Our filling materials are either recycled wood wool, or natural, 100% biodegradable corn-strach based packing peanuts that dissolve in water.

At Verlein we carefully source our leather from Italian tanneries who are committed to environmental stewardship.  We are pleased to say that our leather suppliers have achieved the following in the area of environmental stewardship and sustainability:

Leather Working Group Gold Award

The Leather Working Group (LWG) is a multi-stakeholder group made up of brands, retailers, leather manufacturers, suppliers and technical experts
The group’s objective is to develop and maintain an environmental auditing protocol that assesses the environmental stewardship and compliance of leather manufacturers, while promoting sustainable and environmental business practices.
Achieving a Gold award means the tannery has scored 85% or higher across all LWG Audit categories.  Categories span a wide range of tannery operations that impact the environment, including waste management, energy consumption, water usage, and air and noise emissions, amongst other categories.

Der Blaue Engel

Der Blauer Engel, the German government certification, proves the ecological quality of the leathers produced our suppliers. Leathers are produced with the purpose to minimize their impact on the health and the environment during the production phase as well as in the recycling and disposal phases.
Blauer Engel-certified products further protect the environment and the health of people thanks to a series of tangible benefits:
  • lower consumption of water during the various production phases;
  • use of raw materials produced in a sustainable fashion;
  • sound use of resources during the production or disposal phases;
  • absence of harmful effects on the health and the environment because of the low of emissions;
  • easy to recycle.

ISO 14001:2015 Certification

ISO 14001 is a set of standards and requirements to follow for an effective environmental management system (EMS).  An EMS is used by a company to manage the immediate and long term environmental impacts of an organization’s products, services and processes.  Receiving an ISO 14001 certification means a company has implemented an effective EMS to continually monitor and improve their environmental impact.
All of Verlein’s leather suppliers are ISO 14001 certified.
